Putin Arrives in Beijing Hot on the Heels of Trump’s Visit

Just days after U.S. President Donald Trump concluded a historic visit aimed at stabilizing turbulent U.S.-China relations, Russian President Vladimir Putin touched down in Beijing late Tuesday night. The timing of the arrival sends a calculated message to Washington and the world: the Moscow-Beijing alliance remains steadfast.

Putin and his “long-time good friend,” Chinese President Xi Jinping, are preparing to sign a major joint declaration following their talks. According to the Kremlin, the two leaders will focus on “further strengthening” their strategic partnership while exchanging views on pressing regional and international issues.

The Agenda: Energy and Infrastructure

While diplomatic pleasantries have already begun—with both leaders exchanging “congratulatory letters” over the weekend to mark 30 years of strategic partnership—the closed-door meetings are expected to center on critical economic infrastructure.

A major priority for Moscow is advancing the Power of Siberia 2 natural gas pipeline. Designed to run from Russia to China through Mongolia, the project would offer Beijing a secure, land-based energy alternative to seaborne crude imports from West Asia, a development Moscow is eager to finalize.

An Asymmetrical Alliance

Despite the warm public rhetoric and Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun praising the “enduring friendship” between the two nations, the underlying dynamic of the relationship has fundamentally shifted.

Since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine left Russia largely cut off from Western markets and diplomatically isolated, Moscow has become heavily reliant on Beijing for its economic survival. China is now the primary buyer of sanctioned Russian oil, placing Xi Jinping in a commanding negotiating position.

Putin has made it a point to visit Beijing annually since the Ukraine conflict began, but this trip’s timing—confirmed just hours after the first U.S. presidential visit to China in nearly a decade—highlights the delicate, high-stakes geopolitical balancing act currently playing out.
