Rajnath Singh’s Meeting with Italian Counterpart: Focus on Industrial Ties
NEW DELHI — In a major push for India-Europe strategic ties, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh hold high-level bilateral talks with Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto in the national capital today.
This marks Mr. Crosetto’s maiden visit to India, signaling a new era of military and industrial cooperation between the two nations after years of careful diplomatic rebuilding.
Building on the 2023 Momentum
The relationship between New Delhi and Rome saw a significant breakthrough in October 2023, when Rajnath Singh visited Rome. Since then, the focus has shifted from mere buyer-seller dynamics to Defence Industrial Collaboration.
- Maiden Visit: Minister Crosetto’s arrival is seen as a direct follow-up to the 2023 engagements, reflecting a “growing intent” to diversify India’s defense procurement.
- Strategic Alignment: The talks are taking place under the framework of the India-European Union Defence and Strategic Partnership, which was signed in January 2026.
Agenda: Security and Co-Production
According to the Ministry of Defence (MoD), the deliberations will cover three key areas:
- Global Security: Exchanging views on the volatile situation in West Asia and the Indo-Pacific.
- Technology Transfer: Italy is home to major defense giants like Leonardo, and India is keen on the co-development of naval and aerospace technologies.
- Industrial Joint Ventures: Moving beyond imports to manufacturing Italian-designed defense equipment within India.
The ‘Europe’ Connection
Italy’s proactive stance is part of a broader European trend of engaging more deeply with India on security matters. By strengthening ties with Italy, India is:
- Reducing Dependency: Diversifying its defense hardware away from traditional sources.
- Naval Cooperation: Leveraging Italy’s expertise in ship-building and underwater defense systems, which is crucial for India’s maritime security in the Indian Ocean.
