Rail Link: Jammu and Srinagar Connected
JAMMU / SRINAGAR — Breaking the barriers of the Himalayan terrain, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday flagged off the first-ever direct train service between Jammu and Srinagar.
Describing the feat as “India’s first experience with railway operations at such high altitudes,” the Minister hailed the project as a strategic and economic gamechanger for the Union Territory. J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who joined the ceremony, termed it a “historic day” for the people of the region.
A New Era of Connectivity
The direct service, led by an expanded Vande Bharat fleet, marks the end of the isolation of the Kashmir Valley during winter months when the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway is frequently blocked by snow and landslides.
- All-Weather Access: The rail link ensures a reliable, year-round corridor for passengers and essential supplies.
- Economic Impact: By reducing transit time and costs, the link is expected to provide a massive boost to the region’s fruit industry (apples and saffron) and tourism.
- Engineering Marvel: The route includes the world’s highest railway bridge over the Chenab River and the extensive T-49 tunnel, navigating some of the youngest and most unstable mountain ranges on Earth.
Safety and Future Tech
Minister Vaishnaw emphasized that the project’s success isn’t just about speed, but safety.
- Advanced Monitoring: The Ministry will deploy specialized maintenance systems designed specifically for high-altitude tunnels and bridges.
- Himalayan Engineering: Future focus remains on using advanced sensors to detect seismic activity and slope instability to ensure 100% reliability in the rugged terrain.
