Harjit Singh Grewal Appointed Chairperson of NCM and S. Munawari Begum as Vice-Chairperson

NEW DELHI: In a major administrative move, the Union government has filled the top leadership void at the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) by appointing veteran leader Harjit Singh Grewal as its new Chairperson. The key position had been lying vacant since April 2025.

With this transition, Grewal marks a notable milestone as the second successive Sikh leader to head the statutory body.

New Inductions and Tenure Details

According to the official notification issued by the Ministry of Minority Affairs, the government has cleared a slate of crucial appointments to revitalize the panel:

• Vice-Chairperson: S. Munawari Begum has been appointed to the second-highest office in the commission.
• Member: Glenn E. Souza Ticlo has been named as a new member of the panel.
• Tenure: The newly appointed leadership will serve a term of three years from the date they assume charge, or until further official orders.

• Safeguard Monitoring: Reviewing the implementation of constitutional and legal protections granted to notified minority communities.
• Grievance Redressal: Investigating specific complaints regarding the deprivation of rights and security.
• Policy Advisory: Evaluating the progress of minority development and advising the Central government on necessary socio-economic policy adjustments.
