Codeine Cough Syrup Scam
As the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) continues its investigation, new facts are emerging. It is emerging that this cough syrup is in high demand in Bangladesh, and the issue of hawala transactions is also being investigated. Initial investigations estimated the scam to be worth 100 crore rupees, but evidence has now emerged that it is worth over 2000 crore rupees.
It should be noted that Phensedyl cough syrup, which contains codeine, causes drowsiness and lethargy after consumption, leading to its use as a drug. Shubham Jaiswal, a key accused in this scam, set up his own firm and warehouse in Jharkhand and supplied the syrup to Bangladesh via Bengal. There, it was used as a substitute for alcohol. It should be noted that this entire trade was conducted illegally.
