The United Nations’ leading food security bodies are taking a proactive stance against looming climate disruptions. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) have jointly issued an urgent appeal for $202 million to implement protective measures ahead of volatile weather shifts.

The El Niño Threat Profile

According to joint assessments by the FAO and WFP, the El Niño weather pattern poses multifaceted threats to global agriculture and food supply chains. The funding will be deployed to mitigate three primary risks:

Choking off water supplies in regions heavily reliant on rain-fed agriculture, leading to widespread crop failures and livestock losses.

2. Catastrophic Flooding

Inundating arable land, destroying existing food stores, washing away critical rural infrastructure, and displacing vulnerable communities.
